Have you ever felt like you should be doing something else?
Perhaps you found success, but it left you feeling empty, frustrated and somehow mis-aligned with the things that matter the most to you?
This is how I felt...
I had the best job in the world, or so I thought…
Searching for more meaning and purpose led me to a book called ‘mBraining – how to do cool stuff with your multiple brains’ by Grant Soosalu and Marvin Oka.
The idea to read this book came via a chance email from one of my NLP colleagues who was hosting their first mBIT (Multiple Brain Integration Techniques) course to become a certified mBIT coach.
Something resonated with me, although it wasn’t exactly clear at the time.
A few weeks later I’m driving three hours to attend the course itself, having no idea why there was such a compelling urge to do it!
What was the point? Why put myself through yet another training course?
It was a four-day course and after day one I was in OVERWHELM.
‘Why am I doing this?’ I cried down the phone to my husband. He wisely reminded me of my why… ‘Because this is what you are meant to be doing. Just be patient and see the course through.’ So, I did.
Learning about this neuroscience-based mBraining and its practical coaching techniques, had such a profound effect on me that three months later I resigned from my ‘dream job’.
This was a truly aligned decision and although leaving a high-flying career was risky, I felt ready to use my years of knowledge and experience to help others.
As a fully qualified coach, I've been able to help and develop many people throughout my career. It’s more than a passion because I've seen the results in my own life and others. Coaching people offers a sense of meaning and fulfilment, especially when many of the people I had the privilege to coach, went on to have successful careers of their own.
Some continued to adopt a coaching mentality within their own teams, which was hugely encouraging.
So why is alignment important in your career?
Being fully aligned with who you are embodies one of the essential qualities of becoming a more effective leader and work colleague, ultimately achieving greater success in what you do with less effort. When we work from a place of alignment, we become more centred with our true self and in the ‘flow’ of creating better results for the life we desire.
When the values of your company and your own personal core-values are not aligned, it can lead to a feeling of being unfulfilled no matter how much you earn.
Negative thought patterns can creep in, resulting in behaviours that no longer serve you.
Working in alignment with your core values provides clarity in what you want to achieve and creates a feeling of being on the right path to achieve it.
This results in congruency with all your interactions and consequently, better results.
In his book ‘The 8th Habit’ Stephen R. Covey describes both discipline and structure within the leadership models as ‘aligning’. Without discipline and structure nothing gets done.
Without alignment with your vision for success, career goals, the project you’re working on or even your ‘to do’ list, you can end up incredibly busy and achieve very little.
In dictionary terms, the word ‘alignment’ is described as a position of agreement or alliance.
Alignment in a career environment embodies the feeling of alliance with the people you work with, having similar values to those of the company you work for and, wanting to do more than expected simply because it feels good.
My motto has always been; ‘a job is what you make it’, but this is only possible if your values are truly aligned with your company’s values and you are aligned with the vision you have for your life.
Ask yourself, do the values my company promotes hold the same importance to me?
On a more personal level, alignment means being in tune with your authentic-self, who you really are. Having thoughts that are congruent with your actions and where everything you do resonates with what is truly important to you, enabling you to live a life that is meaningful and fulfilling.
From my own experience I know you can envisage and create any life you desire.

I also know the kind of challenges you are likely to face along the way, and have plenty of experience and know-how to help you navigate what can sometimes become a very challenging place to be.
